Virtue of Surah Al-Waqiah
Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Mas’ud رضى الله عنه was lying on his deathbed and the third Khalifah Sayyiduna Uthman رضى الله عنه came to visit him. The following conversation transpired:
Sayyiduna Uthman رضى الله عنه: “What are you suffering from?”
Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Mas’ud رضى الله عنه: “From my sins.”
Sayyiduna Uthman رضى الله عنه: “Do you desire anything?”
Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Mas’ud رضى الله عنه: “Yes, Allah’s mercy.”
Sayyiduna Uthman رضى الله عنه: “Shall I call a doctor for you?”
Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Mas’ud رضى الله عنه: “It is the doctor who has given me the sickness.” (sickness and cure is from Allah)
Sayyiduna Uthman رضى الله عنه: “May I send you an allowance from the public treasury (Baitul Maal)?”
Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Mas’ud رضى الله عنه: “I have no need for it.”
Sayyiduna Uthman رضى الله عنه: “Accept it; you are leaving daughters behind you. It will help them.”
Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Mas’ud رضى الله عنه: “You are worried about my daughters that they must not suffer from poverty. I have no such worry because I have instructed them to recite Surah Al-Waqiah every night. I have heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, ‘Whoever recites Surah Al-Waqiah every night, will never suffer from poverty.’” [Tafseer ibn Kathir, v. 4]
Note:
We should have a daily practice of reciting this Surah every night before bed.
