Tasbeeh Fatimah
Sayyidah Fatima رضى الله عنها went to the Prophet ﷺ complaining about the impressions left on her hand by using the stone hand-mill. She heard that the Prophet ﷺ had received a slave, but (when she came) she did not find him, so she mentioned her problem to Aishah When the Prophet ﷺ came, Aishah رضى الله عنها informed him about that. Ali رضى الله عنه added, “So the Prophet ﷺ came to us when we had gone to bed. We wanted to get up but he said, ‘Stay where you are.’ Then he came and sat between me and her and I felt the coldness of his feet on my abdomen. He said, ‘Shall I direct you to something better than what you two have requested? When you both go to bed say سُبْحَانَ الله thirty-three times, اَلْحَمْدُ لِلّه thirty-three times, and أَلله أكْبَر thirty-four times. That is better for you than a servant.’”
[Bukhari, #5361]
Sayyiduna Ali ibn Abi Taleb رضى الله عنه narrates, “Fatimah came to the Prophet ﷺ asking for a servant. He said, ‘May I inform you of something better than it? When you go to bed, recite سُبْحَانَ الله thirty-three times, اَلْحَمْدُ لِلّه thirty-three times, andأَلله أكْبَر thirty four times.’” [Bukhari, #5362]
Ibn A’bud said, “Ali رضى الله عنه said to me ‘May I not narrate to you about me and Fatimah, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ? She was most favorite to him of his family.’ I said, ‘Yes.’ He replied, ‘She pulled the grinding stone with her hand so much that it left marks on her hand, she carried water in a water bag to the point that it left marks on her chest, she swept the house to the extent that her clothes became dirty. The Prophet ﷺ acquired some slaves. So, I said, ‘Can you go to your father and ask him for a slave?’ She then came to him and found some people conversing with him. She therefore returned. Next day he (the Prophet ﷺ) came to her and asked, ‘What was your need?’ She kept silent. So, I said, ‘I will inform you, On Messenger of Allah ﷺ. She pulled the grinding stone so much that it left marks on her hand, she carried the water bag to the extent that it left marks on her chest. When the slaves were brought to you, I asked her to come to you and request you for a slave to save her from the exertion she is in.’ He said, ‘Fear Allah O Fatimah, and perform the obligations of your Lord and do the work of your family. When you go to bed, say “سُبْحَانَ الله (Glory be to Allah)” thirty-three times, “اَلْحَمْدُ لِلّه (Praise be to Allah)” thirty- three times, “أَلله أكْبَر (Allah is the Greatest)” thirty-four times. This is a hundred. This will be better for you than a servant.’ She said, ‘I am pleased with Allah, Most High and Majestic, and His Messenger ﷺ.’” [Abu Dawud, #2988]
When the household work became cumbersome for Sayyidah Fatimah رضى الله عنها she went to see her father, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ asking for a servant who can assist her in the domestic chores. Instead, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prescribed this bedtime dhikr:
33 times
33 times
34 times
- Dhikr of Allah is nourishment for the soul.
- This dhikr is to be read by both, the husband and wife at bedtime. When recited at bedtime, it repels all tiredness and gives renewed stamina for the next day.
- Sayyidah Fatimah رضى الله عنها was responsible for the domestic tasks, and Ali رضى الله عنها was the breadwinner for the family.
- This does not absolve the husband of domestic chores. In Saheeh Bukhari, there is another hadith in the same chapter:
Al-Aswad bin Yazid reports that I asked Sayyidah Aishah رضى الله عنها: “What did the Prophet ﷺ use to do at home?” She said, “He would be in the service of his family, and when he heard the Adhan, he would leave.” [Bukhari, #5363] - Doing the household chores is not something to belittle. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ accepted this for his daughter, who is the leader of all the women of Jannah. He also assisted his family in the household chores.
Tasbeehat Fuqaraa (The Dhikr of the Destitute)
Sayyiduna Abu Dharr رضى الله عنه said, “O Prophet of Allah, the wealthy people have taken all the rewards; they pray as we pray; they fast as we fast; and they have surplus wealth which they give in charity; but we have no wealth which we may give in charity.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘O Abu Dharr, should I not teach you phrases by which you will acquire the rank of those who excel you and no one can acquire your rank except the one who does the same as you.’ He said, ‘Why not, O Messenger of Allah?’ He said, ‘Say:أَلله أكْبَر after each prayer thirty-three times, and: اَلْحَمْدُ لِلّه thirty- three times, and سُبْحَانَ الله thirty-three times, and end it by saying,
His sins will be forgiven, even if they are like the foam of the sea.’” [Abu Dawud, #1504]
Note:
The dhikr after each salat is:
33 times
33 times
34 times
In a narration recorded by Saheeh Muslim [#596], one can recite: سُبْحَانَ الله 33 times,
34 times.
This dhikr can be done immediately after the fardh salat or at the end, after all the
non-fardh salats for Zuhr, Maghrib and Esha.
In another narration [Bukhari, #6329] it has been reported to recite: سُبْحَانَ الله , اَلْحَمْدُ لِلّه ,
and أَلله أكْبَر 10 times each after salah.
Note
In total the above dhikr is done 6 times a day, once after each salat and once before sleeping. Each time it will take less the 2 minutes. When done regularly, the person will be remembering Allah 600 times a day!
“Who have believed and whose hearts have rest in the remembrance of Allah. Verily in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest!” [Surah Al-R’ad: v 28]
