Iftaar Duas

The following Iftaar duas have been narrated. These duas can be recited after the tasmiyah (Bismillah).

1.

[Abu Dawud, hadith #2358, Al-Adhkar, #494]

Trans: O Allah, for You I have fasted and with Your provision I open my fast.

2.

[Al-Adhkar, #496]

Trans: O Allah, for You we have fasted and with Your provision we open our fast, so accept it from us. Indeed, You are the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.

3.

It has been reported by Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin ‘Aas رضى الله عنه that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “When the fasting person opens his fast, his dua is not rejected.”

Ibn Abi Mulaikah said: When Abdullah bin Amr bin ‘Aas opened his fast, I heard him say:

[Ibn Majah, hadith #1753, Al-Adhkar, #497]

Trans: O Allah, I ask You through Your Mercy that encompasses everything, that You forgive me.

4.

[Al-Adhkar, #495]

Trans: All praise belongs to Allah, Who assisted me so I can complete my fast and He has provided for me so I opened my fast.

5.

Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Umar رضى الله عنه narrates that whenever the Messenger of Allah ﷺ opened his fast, he would say:

[Abu Dawud, hadith #2357, Al-Adhkar, #493]

Trans: The thirst has quenched, and the veins have moistened, and In Sha’Allah the reward been recorded.

Preferred Sunnah Method of Iftaar:

1) Recite Tasmiyah, the Sunnah dua before eating. Only the following duas before eating are based on ahaadith:

 بِاسْمِ اللهِ وَ بَرَكَةِ الله can also be recited.

2) Open the fast with fresh dates and water.

3) Recite the above Iftaar Duas.

Now one may consume what is available and pray Maghrib salah.

Dua for Suhoor/Sehri:

In hadith there is no sunnah or prescribed dua for sehri/suhoor. The Arabic words بصوم غد نويت / bi saumi ghadin nawatu, is the intention to fast, not a dua. These words are not in hadith, yet there is no harm in expressing one’s intention (niyyah) in the Arabic language or in any other language. The regular authentic sunnah duas for before and after meals are to be recited for sehri/suhoor.

Dua after Eating

Trans:

Sayyiduna Abu Sa’id al-Khudri رضى الله عنه narrates: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ finished his food, he said:

Eng. trans. of dua: Praise be to Allah Who has given us food and drink and made us Muslims.  [Abu Dawud, #3850]

This dua is commonly recited incorrectly:

Yet, the correct version is what is in the hadith, without the letters
