Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik رضى الله عنه reports, “I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ eat together muskmelon and fresh dates.” [Al-Shamaa’il al-Muhammadiyyah, hadith 199]
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Ja’fer رضى الله عنه has reported, “The Prophet ﷺ used to eat cucumber with fresh dates.” [Sunan Abu Dawud, hadith 3835]
Sayyidah Rubayyi bint Mu’awwidh ibn Afraa رضى الله عنها says, “My uncle Mu’aadh ibn Afraa sent me with a plate of fresh dates, which had small cucumbers on it, to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ relished cucumbers, so I tookthis to him.” [Al-Shamaa’il al-Muhammadiyyah, hadith 202]
Sayyidah Aishah رضى الله عنها says, “The Prophet ﷺ would eat watermelon with fresh dates, and he used to say: ‘We repel the heat of this one with the coldness of the other and the cold of this with the heat of the other.’” [Sunan Abu Dawud, hadith 3836]
Sayyidah Aishah رضى الله عنها says, “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ ate watermelon with fresh dates.” [Al-Shamaa’il al-Muhammadiyyah, hadith 198]
Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah رضى الله عنه has reported, “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ Abu Bakr and Umar had fresh dates and water. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said, ‘These are from the bounties that you will be questioned about (in the hereafter).’” [Musnad Ahmed hadith 14786]
Abu Khalid reports, “I went to see a person (Sahaabi), and he was having milk with dates. He said, ‘Come join, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ named these two الْأَطْيَبَيْنِ (two pure wholesome things).’” [Musnad Ahmed 15893]
So, with the intent to follow the Sunnah, snack with:
- dates and cucumbers
- dates and watermelon
- dates and muskmelon
- dates and milk (good alternative to milk and cookies)
- dates and water
Some other fruits the Prophet ﷺ ate during his life:
- Figs
- Pomegranate
- Grapes
- Raisins

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Consume olive oil (eg. by adding it to the curry, salad, etc.) and use its oil (eg. in your hair or apply it on your body, etc.), for indeed it is from a blessed tree.” [Jami’ Tirmidhi, hadith 1851]
