Sunnah of Cleaning One’s Fingers & Utensils of any Food Particles

Sayyiduna Jabir (Allah is pleased with him) narrates: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered to clean the fingers and the utensil, saying; ‘You do not know in which portion the blessing (Barakah) is.” [Muslim, #2033]
Sayyiduna Nubaisha (Allah is pleased with him) reports: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘If anyone eats from a dish and cleans it, the dish will seek forgiveness for him.’” [Tirmidhi, #1804]

Sayyiduna Nubaisha (Allah is pleased with him) reports: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘If anyone eats from a dish and cleans it, the dish will say to him, ‘May Allah free you from the Fire as you have freed me from the Shaytaan.’” [Mishkah, #4242]

Commentary
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ disliked food being wasted. When the barakah descends, the person is not aware as to where the barakah is; therefore, he should ensure no food is wasted. This can be done by cleaning one’s fingers and plate. The Noble Messenger ﷺ would clean his fingers of any food particles by licking them.

Sayyiduna Anas (Allah is pleased with him) reports: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ liked Al-Thufl.” [Musnad Ahmad, #13300]

Al-Thufl – is the food left at the bottom of the pot or left in the serving tray or bowl.
This is the food that people generally do not want to consume, and it gets thrown out. However, the Noble Messenger ﷺ would relish the food left that is at the bottom. This indicates his level of humbleness and gratitude for Allah’s blessings. Therefore, cleaning out the food from the bottom of the pot and consuming it, provided it is edible e.g. not burnt, is a sunnah, and it will also assist in eliminating any pride within the heart.
