– After drinking water the Prophet ﷺ would recite:

اَلْحَمْدُ لِلّه الَّذِىْ سَقَانَا عَذْبًا فُرَاتًا بِرَحْمَتِهِ وَ لَمْ يَجْعَلْهُ مِلْحًا اُجَاجًا بِذُنُوْبِنَا

Trans: All praise is due to Allah, Who of His Mercy has granted us sweet and pleasant water to drink and did not make it bitter and salty due to our sins. [Ruh al-Ma’ani, Al-Waqiah v. 70]

The Prophet ﷺ would:

  1. sit and drink
  2. not pour the water into his blessed mouth but would drink in such a manner the water would touch his lips
  3. not gulp it down all at once but draw it into the mouth gradually
  4. drink in two or three sips and take a breath after each sip
  5. not breathe into the cup, but he would move it away from his blessed mouth to take a breath
  6. say Bismillah once at the beginning
  7. say Al-Hamdulillah either once at the end or after each sip both are sunnah
  8. drink with his right hand
  9. not drink from the chipped part of the cup
  10. also recite the dua after drinking water
